An adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s historical novel written between 1863 and 1869, telling the story of Russian aristocracy in the turbulent Napoleonic era. The film, directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, was made on an incredibly great scale. According to some, War and Peace is, perhaps, the most expensive film ever made, also because of the soviet authorities’ involvement in its production, albeit its actual cost is difficult to estimate.
