  • THE FINAL BELL

Krystyna Starczewska, Krzysztof Podemski, Małgorzata Dziewulska, Agnieszka Jankowiak-Maik, Anna Schmidt-Fic, Laura Paluszkiewicz, 200 bez bólu

The teachers' strike in Poland lasted three weeks and aroused extreme emotions. What did the protesters fight for? Moral, political, or civilizational issues? Who is the Polish teacher? Do they teach and prepare for exams or for life? What role did teachers play in the past? Who does the school system educate today? And how do we remember our teachers? Among debaters there are true living legends of Polish education, currently active educators and their pupils: Małgorzata Dziewulska, Agnieszka Jankowiak-Maik (author of the Babka od histy blog), Michał Merczyński, Laura Paluszkiewicz, Krzysztof Podemski, Anna Schmidt-Fic, Krystyna Starczewska, and the "200 bez bólu" student group. The debate will be hosted by Karolina Lewicka.

FORUM 2019: A culture of war in a time of peace

The Forum for discussions in Wolności Square is where we broadly talk about the main festival theme. This year, our focus is on the relationship between war and peace. Statistics show that we are living in the safest and least brutal period in history, but despite this, war is not an abstract or unreal concept at all. What form does war take in this most peaceful of ages? How do we define this state of war/peace? What will future wars be like?

We invite you to meet writers, philosophers, political scientists and people who have participated in and witnessed contemporary warfare.

The discussions are accompanied by staged readings of excerpts from a selection of books.
