The English word ‘love’ has long been present in the Polish everyday vocabulary. But the word ‘hate’ (Polonised as ‘hejt’) has only recently emerged in our public debate. How can this be explained? Arguments about civilising ‘aggressive instinct’ suggest that things should be different. In times of insecurity, fear of the future, in the age of internet and social media, is it possible to somehow curb or ritualise hating?
