The jury board of the European Festivals Association recognised Malta Festival again, awarding it the Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe Label (2019-2020). The first time Malta was distinguished as an event of special significance, to be then awarded an EFFE for trendsetting festivals, was in 2015. Vincent Baudriller, the head of the jury, director of Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne and former director of Festival d’Avignon, said: “initially presenting theatre, for five years [the festival] has been inviting top artists to curate programs revolving around particular themes and ideas.
Receiving the EFFE label is tantamount to immediate nomination for the EFFE award, handed every two years by EFA. The candidates need to meet certain criteria: commitment to art, social activism, international and global mindset. The results of this year’s competition are to be revealed in July.
